Nurturing the Whole Child

At Brawerman West, we believe a great education nurtures the whole child.

Our Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) program helps students understand themselves, connect with others, and navigate the world with empathy and confidence.

Values in Action

Through daily interactions, guided reflection, and intentional instruction, children learn the skills that make strong leaders. They develop self-awareness, resilience, active listening, and problem-solving. Grounded in Jewish values like chesed (kindness), tikkun olam (repairing the world), and kavod (respect), social-emotional learning influences how students think, relate, and participate in communities.

Developing Emotional Intelligence and Leadership

Our SEL program draws from leading frameworks, including The Institute for
Social-Emotional Learning (IFSEL), Social Thinking, Responsive Classroom, Zones of Regulation, Positive Education, and Growth Mindset. These approaches help us meet students where they are and respond to their unique developmental needs.

Every day, teachers model emotional awareness and guide students through moments of reflection and growth. We teach children to:

  • Name and manage emotions with empathy and self-awareness
  • Work through conflicts respectfully and collaboratively
  • Recognize others’ perspectives and practice compassion
  • Lead with integrity through classroom responsibilities and mentorship opportunities

Building Stronger Relationships and Resilience

Our teachers use narration, coaching, and feedback to help students navigate friendships and challenges in real time. Dedicated SEL blocks allow space to role-play scenarios, problem-solve as a group, and explore themes relevant to each grade level.

We also focus on mattering, the belief that every student is seen, valued, and essential to the community. When children know they matter, they develop the resilience and optimism to thrive.

Mindfulness Practice

Mindfulness is a daily practice at Brawerman West. Students pause to check in with themselves, reflect on their learning, and build habits of self-regulation that support focus and calm. Zen Zones in every classroom provide quiet spaces where children can reset when emotions run high.

Conflict Resolution

Conflict resolution is approached as a skill to be learned, not a behavior to be corrected. Through modeling, read-alouds, and guided reflection, teachers help students slow down, listen deeply, and repair relationships with empathy.

Connected Through Values

SEL at Brawerman West is inseparable from Jewish learning. Each year’s school-wide theme aligns with both our Mensch Code and the core SEL competencies, creating a shared language of character and care. This year’s theme—Tikkun, or repair—invites students to practice what they learn by making the world a little kinder every day.

With guidance from caring teachers and a culture of support, our students grow in character, courage, and compassion, ready not only for academic success, but for a life of meaning and contribution.
